TL;DR: A board of advisors in Claude is a Claude Skill that reviews each business decision through three to five frameworks you already trust, one lens at a time, and shows where those lenses agree and disagree. It sharpens the decision without making it. Below: how one works, and three ways to seat your own board.
You can’t please everybody, and AI has read more of what’s been published than any of us ever will. So in the same way that you wouldn’t go to Google, look for business advice and click on the first link, I don’t just want AI to decide what kind of business advice or marketing advice I trust.
So I’ve read books. I like certain authors. I like certain principles, and I’ve made my board of advisors based on those. And that is the piece that I love, because the only answer that comes back follows my board of advisors’ Claude skill, which means it is following the principles of the business authors, leaders, and frameworks that I already trust, the books that I follow. (Claude is Anthropic’s AI assistant, and a skill is a set of instructions you save once and Claude follows every time.)
Below is how my board works, why five advisors beat one answer, and three ways to build your own.
What You’ll Walk Away With
A way to hear the pros and cons of every big decision, through advisors you picked, before you commit.
Three ways to seat your own board this week, even if you’ve never thought about who would be on it.
Why I Built a Board of Advisors in Claude
I had a pretty complex funnel in my business that goes from free subscribers to paid subscribers to founding members, and a website for my consulting side, Substack channel, premium hub, an about me page, and all these things needed to work together cohesively. I now needed something that could both study all of them, study all the content, help me review it on a quarterly basis, but then also see it through a certain business lens. That’s what got this started.
My board has been running since March 2026, and every piece of ad copy, my CTAs, my sales funnel, any business change decisions, price changes, expansion, or ideas that are just not producing and I leave behind, all that goes through it.
Want a second opinion on where to start with AI?
We all got the tools at the same time, the way everyone eventually got electricity. Having it in the building was never what made the difference. What we did with it was.
I take three diagnostic calls a month. It’s 30 minutes, free, and we work out what you’re actually trying to get to, where your biggest hurdles sit, what your low-hanging fruit is, and how that lines up with what I’ve been seeing elsewhere. Then I tell you the first move I’d make.
A few days later you get it back in writing, two or three pages, yours whether we ever work together or not.
How Five Advisors Sift Every Decision
That’s why I have five advisors instead of just asking Claude a single idea, because it’s synthesizing and it’s essentially acting as a sifter through the principles that are in those books, one of them being Ray Dalio’s book, Principles. While I respect a ton of different business leaders, there’s a lot that I just wouldn’t follow their frameworks or their way of doing things. So the five are the ones that go with what I’m doing.
It’s the same move I made with my news, when I stopped scrolling and onboarded a filter instead.
It doesn’t make any decisions for me. The judgment is still mine, but it does help clarify that for me. There have been times when I have gone with my gut because I wasn’t convinced on what the board was telling me. We would do that with consultants in real life as well, but it helps you make educated decisions every single time. And not just go with my gut on a blind whim, but actually go with my gut after understanding pros and cons of different sides.
Isn’t This Just AI Role-Playing Famous Authors?
A smart reader might say this is AI role-playing famous authors, and it’s not famous authors. I’m not asking it to speak to me like Bezos or speak like someone, but to follow the well documented and case studied frameworks from these authors.
Quick Win (under 60 seconds) Next time you ask Claude for business advice, add one line: “Answer using only the principles in [a book you trust], and tell me when you go beyond them.”
Three Ways to Seat Your Own Board
Now, if you don’t have a set, then I recommend you start with a Claude interview. If you don’t have preferred business creators, you can start with my five, but I recommend that you start with a back-and-forth conversation with Claude on what are your preferences, what do you admire, what kind of businesses, companies you admire, and you’ll get to the frameworks that suit you best.
In May I shared the Claude skill I built from Ray Dalio’s principles, which gave you one advisor, and the skill below seats the whole board.
